Why |
All proceeds will go to both the Tara Llanes Road to Recovery and the Christopher Reeve-Irvine Research Center. The Tara Llanes Road to Recovery Fund was initially started to help Tara after her career ending crash that left her paralyzed from the waist down. Tara was injured in 2007, but still has had to undergo numerous surgeries because of her paraylsis and continues to pay a tremendous amount for medical equipment including leg braces and a standing frame. While Tara was in the hospital doctors and therapists hooked her up to a machine called an FES bike. FES stands for Functional Electrical Stimulation and what it does is it applies small electrical pulses to paralyzed muscles to promote regeneration and recovery of function. It's commonly used for exercise, but it also assists with breathing, grasping, transferring, standing and walking. The price of a new FES bike is $15,000. Tara has looked for a used one, but they are extremely difficult to come by. So our goal is to help her purchase an FES bike so that she has a chance to recover some of her lost function. The Reeve-Irvine Research Center is trying to find new treatments for spinal cord injury through the collaborative research and educational efforts of prominent scientists and clinicians both at the University of California, Irvine and around the world. Tara has met with the RIRC faculty and truly believes that this research center will in time be able to find a cure for paralysis, but they need the funds to get there. Tara wants to help the Reeve-Irvine Center reach their goal because the quicker they reach theirs, the quicker Tara she reaches hers! If you don't already know what Tara's goal is, it's to ride her bike again! http://www.reeve.uci.edu/Home/ |
Course Description:
There WILL be a chairlift this year. We will NOT be running shuttles. Suuweeet! Thanks Andy!
Pro / Cat. 1: The race course begins at the summit of Mount Pluto and descends 1760 ft to the mid mountain lodge. Right out of the gate is the East Ridge, a full speed technical fire road that leads to the Tahoe trail, a smooth singletrack that swoops it’s way down past the top Vista chairlift. Now your are on to Sticks and Stones which is a challenging mix of jumps, rock drops, rock gardens and log rides. The race finishes at the bottom of the Vista chair at the stadium jump where the crowd will be waiting!
Cat. 2 / Cat. 3: The course begins at the summit of Mt Pluto with an open fire road that leads to a smooth flowing section of trail with swooping banked turns. At the top of the Vista Express chair riders will enter the Sicks & Stones trail, which consists of some tight turns in the trees and some manageable rock rolls and drops with plenty of space to ride around. About half way down Cat.2 and Cat.3 riders will be directed over to the Speed Control trail. By going over to Speed Control these classes avoid the technical rock garden section of Sticks & Stones. Speed Control has some nice rollers and wide open turns through the ski run that will take you back onto a fire road. You’ll be on that fire road for about a hundred meters or so when you’ll hit the bottom of Sticks and Stones. Sticks and Stones will take you into the finish line where you’ll hit a series of big-bermed corners leading to the Stadium Jump which is the finish line tabletop.
4 Wheel Route: We will be racing down LiveWire again this year! LiveWire’s tacky dirt will grip and grab tires for optimal traction on its smooth, fast, and flowing 1.8 miles that are packed with tabletops, doubles and berms. This trail was modeled after Whistler’s infamous A-Line trail and is built for speed; all rocks were excavated for a super-smooth surface It features a vertical drop of 1,100 feet and more than 45 tabletop jumps, gap options and big, high-speed berms. This course is fairly wide the entire way down and all the jumps are safe to roll over. Of course why would you roll them if you can jump them!
